Most single moms choose to be single moms. FALSE
Most single moms become single parents by circumstances such as divorce, death of a spouse, teen or unplanned/unexpected pregnancy, incarceration of spouses and men choosing alternative (gay) lifestyles.
Most single moms want to be pitied by society. FALSE Most single moms do not want a hand out, but a hand up such as access to opportunities to excel and achieve the American dream (higher education, homeownership, equitable wages, vacations, affordable housing and child care) while parenting on their own.
Most single moms are welfare recipients. FALSE Most single moms are independent, vibrant, hardworking women who sometimes work multiple jobs to make it on their own and to raise their children on their own. Most single moms desire to obtain a college education, start their own businesses and to obtain financial stability as a means to enhance their quality of life for their families.
Society (media, government, churches, etc.) treat single moms as second class citizens because we are parenting on our own. However, the reality is that many single moms often accomplish what some two-family households cannot do which is raising productive, healthy children while stretching their dollars to manage their households on their own without skipping a beat.
Most single moms are lazy, baby-making machines. FALSE Although there is a segment of the population of single moms who choose to take advantage of the system, they are not the norm. Most single moms willingly work to care for their children. They have big goals and dreams and although they make many sacrifices and endure many struggles at times, they continue to work hard to create a financially stable environment for their families.
Single moms can not effectively parent (especially boys) on their own. FALSE While it is difficult raising any child in today's environment of societal woes, many single moms are successfully raising productive, healthy children on their own (both boys and girls).
